Vanessa Ayala is a New York based contemporary painter whose practice reimagines portraiture as an act of transcendence. A first-generation American of Andean descent, with Quechua and Aymara ancestry, Ayala honors oral tradition, authentic narratives, lived experiences and migration.
Through storytelling, her luminous portraits center Indigenous women from across the Americas. She explores ethereal realms where the sacred and surreal converge into an offering of sanctuary. Her use of oil engages the visual language of devotional painting and colonial histories, while airbrush serves as a personal and cultural tool of remembrance. Through layered symbolic forms, intuitive patterning, and atmospheric color her figures exist within worlds of presence, dignity, and spiritual sovereignty.
Ayala’s work has been exhibited throughout the United States, including Living Indigenously at the Delaware Art Museum and Women in Nature: Taking Up Space at the Evanston Art Center. Her recent engagements include a commission from the Urban Indigenous Collective for its Indigenous Survivors Program as well as a studio visit and demonstration for The Cooper Union. In 2026, she was a featured artist at the MMIP NYC+ East Coast Summit. She holds a BFA from California College of the Arts and is the recipient of a Grammy Certificate for design.
